HD. A new era for me... And goodbye to my old friend.

So it's goodbye to my old DVCam tape camera, an old workhorse of mine for the past 12 years. A sad day, but looking forward to filming with my new 350 XDCAM camera. The future awaits in newsgathering for the BBC.

A pleasant start to a news cameraman's day...

Occasionally, being on the road as a news cameraman isn't all about rushing around the country like a lunatic. Sometimes, you get to sit back for a while and take in some of the nicest places... Especially when breakfast is involved.

Space 2011. What happened to the Lycra..?

(download)

I remember watching a programme called Space 1999 when I was a kid, living on the moon, spaceships, and ladies in Lycra space suits. Here we are in 2011, and I'm filming for BBC Breakfast News at the launch of the UK Space Agency, at Didcot, Oxfordshire. Hardly the moon and skintight leggings but hey... We got donuts, tea and sticky buns.

I didn't sweat much... For a fat lad.

This must have been the fifth or sixth time I have filmed the Reading Half Marathon, or the little Snickers as I call it. ( if you can remember Marathon Bars..!! ) Thousands of fit, toned and athletic bodies warming up and stretching before running hell for leather for 13 miles or so.

Me..? I'm happy just standing by the sidelines, exercising my digits on the zoom demand, supping a cuppa, and generally growing fat and older. But before I go.. There's a great bacon sandwich at the press venue that needs my urgent attention.

So much to point a lens at...

(download)

Filming at Winchester Cathedral today I had the opportunity to wander around. I generally enjoy historical places, but when a place is choc full of things to see, it is hard to know where to point your lens at next.

Even whilst walking, you can find yourself walking on the tomb of a long dead person who wandered the earth over 300 or so years ago, longer if you look for the stones. Considering that Winchester Cathedral is nearly 1000 years old, it must be pretty full of old bones of clergy, generals, and other notable dignitaries entombed in this massive building.

So anyway, I hope you liked the pics from what was a quick look around. Maybe next time, I'll spend a little longer wandering around, but on this occasion, work beckoned....
